This car has been in our family since its creation. Back in 1986 my dad bought this NA MR2 off the showroom floor (View original sticker). For about 16 years he drove this car until he bought a new MR2, a 2001 MR-S. The ’86 MR2 was driven by my Mom for a few months after that. She then got a new car and so the MR2 sat. Because my 86 Celica was in need of some major work (and not really safe to drive) my Dad worked out a deal with me. I would sell him the 86 Celica as a down payment on the MR2. I jumped at the offer and started driving the MR2. In the 16 years that my Dad drove the car he did a great job of keeping it in good condition. I plan to do the same. I have started autocrossing the car on the weekends.
My goal with this car is to keep it in the condition I got it, which is pretty good. I learned a hard lesson with my old car (1993 Celica Alltrac). I sunk way too much money into the Alltrac and didn’t do “smart” modifications. Reliability went down while the bills went up. I finally decided to sell the car (a VERY hard choice) in order to pay off my credit cards. Well the Alltrac sold and the credit cards got paid off and I think it all worked out for the best. I have done some modifications to the MR2 but all have been fairly unobtrusive and don’t hurt the reliability of the car. Doing the 20v swap was a tough choice for me as I didn’t want to hack into the car and ruin it. But its going well so far and I think it won’t hurt the reliability at all.
